2005 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The standard for suvs is completely redesigned. introductionthe introduction of the all-new jeep grand cherokee represents a bold move by daimlerchrysler. Yet its proportions are completely different from before, with more steel and less glass, a laid-back windshield, the trademark giant wheel well flares, and a slickly angular body without the cladding of the previous generations; just one small spear. The d-pillar has been laid forward, which cuts into cargo space, but it sure looks cool. It's got a replaceable chin spoiler on it, and it looks mean. Inside, it's got nearly 70 cubic feet of storage and three modern, if not brand-new, powerplants.  interior materials are dramatically improved over the previous model's, which left much to be desired. The atmosphere inside the new grand cherokee is light, comfortable, and more enveloping than the previous model, more bolted in than hanging on from the driver's perspective, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around the relatively slim posts, and all the switches and controls clearly labeled and easy to find and use.  for the first time, a jeep can be married to the engine that put chrysler back on the map, the 5. 7-liter hemi. It's particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. However, we found the 4. 7-liter v8 worked great. The standard v6 is a vast improvement over jeep's old inline-6. A new suspension gives the grand cherokee much better handling, leaning less in corners, along with better ride quality. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good when driving off road or in crowded parking lots.  jeep engineers have come up with a larger, edgier and more macho suv with an engine that's among the most powerful in the segment. This is after years of being afflicted with old, weak engines and saddled with a small cargo compartment. lineupjeep grand cherokee comes in two models, laredo and limited. The basic laredo comes standard with a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6 and a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 or 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is available for both laredo and limited. Side curtain air bags are optional.  a dynamic handling system (dhs) is available as part of the quadra-drive ii 4x4 system on late-2005 hemi models. Dhs reduces body roll, or lean, when cornering, resulting in sportier handling. An electronic stability program (esp) is also available, and comes packaged with the hemi.  options include gps navigation built into the radio 1,200), a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, a trailer tow package 255), boston acoustics audio, uconnect hands-free communication system 275), smart beam headlamps that sense the available natural light and adjust accordingly, and rear park assist 1,200). The traditional off-road package 420) with tow hooks is available, along with chromed alloy wheels, and an engine block heater for winter trekking. On the limited model, the gauges are surrounded by chrome rings.  the cargo area features a reversible load floor panel that flips over on itself to create a shallow container, for more versatility in the rear storage compartment. As a system, the new interior is far better organized, more light in feeling and color, and altogether more roomy than the previous version, which had been around since 1993. driving impressionto be honest, we didn't like the old grand cherokee very much, because we never thought it was very grand. It was small inside, with a dark, confusing interior, too much plastic, really cheap seats, and not much cargo space, but always fun off-road. This new grand cherokee erases all the bad stuff about the old version, but keeps the mountain-goat-like off-road performance, finally becoming grand in the process.  the basic laredo comes standard with the chrysler-made 210-horsepower single-overhead-cam 3. 7-liter v6, borrowed from its sister trucks, the jeep liberty and dodge ram, with its own five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. The 3. 7 replaces the tired, old 4-liter inline six engine that was in the last grand cherokee and was a relic from american motors' inventory of 25 years ago (still used in the wrangler). The v6 gets an epa-rated 16/21 mpg city/highway, while the v8s get 14/21. It's coupled with new lighter, more compact and more precise power rack-and-pinion steering that's reasonably quick and accurate, and nicely weighted. There seemed to be a more flatfooted, glued-down attitude with this big jeep, with far less body roll than the previous model, which had a bit of body roll built into it that paid some comfort dividends off-road. This one is just as comfortable on- and off-road without it.  front suspension travel is increased by almost 10 percent over the previous grand cherokee, and the new steering geometry yields a tighter turning circle, which counts heavily off road. A new five-link rear suspension combined with the new steering and new front suspension produced a boulevard ride, and cornering prowess, like no other jeep in history, an enormous improvement. We don't usually go around flinging 4500-pound suvs into corners, but this one invited a little bad behavior, which was very rewarding within the limits of its tires. This means the overall length and wheelbase can vary tremendously, the latter from 120 inches to 157. 4. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine for the base-level xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that generates 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and regular cab xlt, and standard in all others. A 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 260 horsepower is available as an option for most f-150s. All three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can be promoted to ultimate king ranch status, with leather captain's chairs, premium audio, and unique identification.  i love the supercrew, which features luxurious rear-seat accommodations that can be converted into covered cargo storage. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The top-rung lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with handsome leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  for 2002, even base-level xls are air conditioned. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models.  with colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. And this matrix includes some specialty models.  new for 2002 is the fx4 off-road package, which includes 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with exposed lug nuts, rancho-brand shocks, three skid plates, a 3. 55 axle and p265/70r17 white-outline tires. The fx4 package is available only on 4x4 models, but the package price ranges from $620-$1165 depending on trim level and body style.  the high-performance svt lightning, packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Specialized wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited production image-generator is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch wheelbase.  also available for 2002 is a new limited-edition ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine, unique styling cues and a new color option: dark shadow grey. The 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is the third truck jointly developed by ford motor company and harley-davidson motor company. (it joins two other limited-edition models: the 2000 ford harley-davidson f-150 super cab and the 2001 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car than the dodge, chevy, or gmc. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram has been redesigned for 2002, but retains a retro look that won't appeal to everyone (at least not as intensely as it appeals to its die-hard fans).  the f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when navigating in tight city traffic. Like the ram, however, its fenders seem to fill small rural roads. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  the 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew incorporates styling cues of the past with an innovative flair. The front end of the vehicle features a new upper chrome billet grille, clear-lens headlamps and clear-lens parking lamps embossed with the harley-davidson bar & shield. For 2002, a distinct rivet design surrounds the center of the 20x9-inch five-spoke chromed cast-aluminum wheels, complementing the center caps that display the harley-davidson bar & shield. Flame pin striping and chrome accessories complement the overall package. As in the past, the ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is lowered one inch. It features a specially tuned exhaust system with a dual inlet/dual outlet muffler, ending in chrome 3 1/2-inch 'slash cut' exhaust tips. interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice place to change into and out of driver's suits when we go racing.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat luggage space. It's a great place to put cargo or big dogs. I like putting all my equipment back there when i go fly fishing. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. This is because they use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear.  up front, the 2wd pickups use a coil-spring independent suspension, while the 4x4 versions use a torsion bar front suspension.  power steering is over-assisted, to make it easier to park and maneuver in tight quarters.  we find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. All-new lineup sets new standards for compacts. introductionit's hard to find a more competitive new car market than the compact class. And it's more than just price, as the number of entries has skyrocketed in recent years.  honda once led the class, in every measure that mattered, from performance to price to quality to pizzazz. And just as important image-wise, honda led the hot, sport compact niche. With the redesigned, restyled, rejuvenated 2006 honda civic models, the company has returned to the fray with renewed energy.  across the line, there's more power, improved ride and handling, and better people packaging. There are more choices as well: a sporty new civic si coupe, a fully populated tier of coupes and sedans with new engines and transmissions, and a more efficient and effective hybrid sedan. In between there's a sedan listing at $15,560 with the new five-speed automatic. The si starts at $20,290. There are other cars in the class that undercut these figures, but the civic includes important safety features, including antilock brakes and side-impact airbags as standard equipment, that many others leave on the option list. lineuphonda doesn't hold back when it comes to fleshing out a model line. A performance-oriented coupe, the si, comes with a 197-horsepower, 2. 0-liter inline-4 fitted with a six-speed manual. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat. Added to the no-extra-charge features on the lx are power moonroof; variable windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; a seven-speaker, 350-watt, xm-ready, premium stereo with auxiliary input jack and steering wheel-mounted controls; and outside temperature indicator. There are few options available and honda positions its options packages and automatic transmissions as separate models, so for example, there is the civic coupe ex with navigation and automatic transmission 21,010) and the similarly equipped sedan version 20,760).  the si coupe 20,290) comes with all the gear found on the lx coupe plus leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, amber-tinted headlight trim rings and a body-colored rear wing spoiler. The si coupe is available with high-performance summer tires and the navigation system with xm satellite radio 22,240).  the hybrid sedan 22,150) adds to the lx's features automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. The hybrid is available with the navigation system 23,650).  dealer accessories include 16-inch alloy wheels 876), chrome exhaust tips 119), and aero-style, exterior body add-ons for the sedan. Honda factory performance packages are available for the si, one for the lx and ex coupes and sedans. The si hfp package includes lowered springs, more tautly tuned shocks, a sports muffler, 18-inch alloy wheels, a full lower-body aero kit and the hfp emblem 3880). The lx and ex hfp package for the coupe 3183) and sedan 3680) substitutes 17-inch alloy wheels, drops the muffler and adds a rear spoiler. Installation costs extra and is set by dealers. walkaroundhonda re-did everything for 2006. Not only are powertrains updated and upgraded, and a new platform developed, but the sheetmetal is new. Not a single body panel is carried over from 2005.  the sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. And trim elements and markings distinguish each iteration.  the platform underneath is new for 2006, seriously strengthened in rigidity, stiffness and crash absorption capacities, with minor adjustments to accommodate the varying dimensions of the coupe and sedan body styles. As part of its campaign to revitalize the civic's appeal to the sport compact market, honda has incorporated reinforced mounting points and gussets to allow suspension and certain other modifications without diminishing body integrity.  from the front, styling differences are subtle, but marked. A polished, horizontal bar dominates the sedan grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille appears more open, with the honda logo suspended on a matte-black framework. An understated badge tucked away in the far right reaches of the grille identifies the sporty si version. The coupe headlights are more sharply outlined. The lower air intake opens between two, geometric recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps.  the front ends, but especially the coupes', push the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the 2006's wider track (the distance side to side between the tires), which grows by more than an inch in front and by more than two inches in back over the 2005's.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the new civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the design concept of 'cab forward' to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees, markedly steeper than the '05's 26. 7 degrees, even exceeding the acura nsx's 23. 9 degrees. And the sedan's matches the nsx's, dropping from the '05's 29. 1 degrees. The sail (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model as well. The coupe's forms an acute angle emphasizing the two-door body style, while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and chopped off tail end adds perceived mass to the tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top, all very bmw-like in presence. interiorif the 2006 civic's exterior is new, the '06's interior borders on shocking. First impression of the instrument arrangement is of a video game. Controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Ironically, perhaps, the interiors are indistinguishable across the full line, with only minor differences necessitated by the different powertrains.  splayed across the top of the seemingly unending dash in front of the driver is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for the instrument panel, in the half circle formed by the top half of the steering wheel, that is, there's a large, round, analog tachometer. To each side of this lower ip are large, irregular vent registers. Centered in the dash above the climate control panel is either an lcd window combining the navigation display and audio settings and, in the hybrid, a selection of graphic depictions of the hybrid system's functions and status or a stereo control head with the pertinent accoutrements. To the right of this squished pod-like arrangement, the dash curves away from the front seat passenger and houses two, more horizontally oriented vent registers, again neither of which matches the other. A wide, but not especially deep glove box rests below a cabin-wide, clam shell-like notch dividing the upper and lower halves of the dash.  there is no center stack to speak of tying together the dash and the drive tunnel.

2005 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid mid-size sedan; practical maxx. introductionthe chevrolet malibu was launched to compete with the mid-size imports from japan. We were surprised by the acceleration performance from the v6 and delighted by the crispness of handling on winding roads. It feels firmer than the camry, but softer than the accord, a good balance, in other words. Malibu's solid structure is based on gm's new epsilon platform used by a couple of highly successful european sedans. Along with its compliant suspension, this gives the malibu a smooth, comfortable ride, yet allows for spirited driving. This is no mush-mobile. It's quiet underway. No question, this is a highly competent sedan that's practical and easy to live with.  where the malibu needs work is in the appearance department. Introduced as an all-new model for 2004, the malibu is better looking than the plain-looking previous model, but it's no raving beauty. That silver band across the front is designed to clearly identify this as a chevy, but it won't go down in history as a great design.  the malibu has something the imports don't: the maxx. Maxx is a longer-wheelbase variant, whose extended roofline and rear cargo hatch suggest a sporty station wagon. While malibu seems destined to disappear into a crowd, maxx looks just as determined to stand out and be noticed.  starting at just a hair under $19,000 and topping out below $25,000, malibu base prices are extremely competitive with the prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can approach $30,000 with options. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class in the j. Ls and lt versions come with a 3. 5-liter overhead-valve v6. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with traction control are optional 400). Side-impact airbags and head curtain airbags are optional for base and ls models 690) and we recommend them highly. A package 1,095) for the ls sedan includes: side curtain airbags; remote vehicle starter; carpeted floor mats; and six-way power driver's seat.  lt adds: automatic climate control; seat-mounted side-impact and side curtain airbags; front and rear reading lights; remote vehicle starter; leather seats; heated front seats; 6-way power driver's seat; seat cushion storage pockets for outboard seating positions; leather-wrapped steering wheel with steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; two illuminated vanity mirrors in front; fog lamps; power and heated outside rearview mirrors; body-color rocker moldings; a rear spoiler; 16-inch tires and wheels. An optional package for the lt 1,230) includes a homelink transmitter for opening garages and security gates; a light-sensitive auto dimming rearview mirror, xm satellite radio and a power sunroof.  maxx is built in the same three trim levels: base 20,760), ls 21,260), and lt 24,405). But the base-level maxx is better equipped than the base-level sedan, and comes with the v6, cruise control, traction control, anti-lock brakes (abs), 16-inch steel wheels, power hatch release, and other highline features. Similar options packages are available for maxx. A dvd entertainment center with wireless headphones and a monitor that flips up from the front console 995) is available.  options for malibu sedan and maxx include: xm satellite radio 325 plus the $9. 99 monthly subscription fee); gm's onstar communications system 695); a power sunroof 725); and a rear spoiler for the sedan 175) or maxx 300). Three levels of audio are available, from the base am/fm stereo and cd player to the top-of-the-line system with an in-dash, six-cd changer, six speakers, and automatic volume and tone controls 300). A unique option is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down. walkaroundthe chevrolet malibu looks more contemporary than its bland predecessor, with more character and class. It also looks more substantial, giving the impression it's a more expensive car than it is. And it is, indeed, more substantial, slightly wider than the model it replaces.  the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along, along with malibu's squinty headlamps, attempts to invoke a family resemblance to chevy trucks, which have been highly successful in the marketplace, but the design execution didn't work as well on this mid-size car.  the rear of the sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. And indeed, the malibu shares its structure with the highly successful german opel vectra and the swedish saab 9-3. Malibu is built on gm's new epsilon global platform, a front-wheel-drive architecture developed by a team of american, german and swedish engineers. Epsilon is also being used for the new pontiac g6. The bottom line is that the epsilon platform provided good bones for a new malibu sedan.  from the center post of its roof forward, malibu maxx is identical to the sedan. From there back, however, maxx is a different and more innovative vehicle. Maxx isn't larger than the sedan, but it is proportioned differently. At 106. 3 inches, the wheelbase of the malibu sedan stands at the small end of the mid-size spectrum. Maxx rides a wheelbase that's six inches longer, stretching 112. 3 inches. Yet in overall length the maxx is a half-inch shorter than the sedan (187. 8 inches vs. 188. 3). That gives the maxx very short overhangs, a good thing. Maxx is a half-inch taller than the sedan. Its roof is longer, its trunk shorter, increasing space for rear-seat passengers. interiorthe malibu looks as substantial inside as out. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, the malibu sedan is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front passenger seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis. The rear seat splits and folds 60/40.  the interior is conservatively styled. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. The heating and air conditioning controls were a little confusing, however. Likewise, the stereo seemed designed more for style than function, though it worked well. We thought the wipers were a little loud. And the triangularly shaped outside mirrors are small, limiting rearward vision more than we liked.  otherwise, it's a convenient interior. Its rear seat is split 60/40 not only in the back, but in the cushion; and each unit slides fore and aft as much as seven inches to adjust between passenger and cargo room. Rear-seat passengers sit farther back in the maxx and enjoy nearly identical room as the front-seat occupants, and as much as the rear-seat riders in a full-size domestic sedan. Maxx's rear seatbacks also recline for improved comfort. In short, the back seats of the maxx are a comfortable place for adults.  standard in the maxx is a fixed skylight over the rear seating area, so rear-seat passengers can see clouds by day and stars by night. Or they can close their individual sunshades.  back in the cargo bay, maxx provides 22. 8 cubic feet of space, vs. 15. 4 for the trunk of the sedan. Fold down maxx's back seats and the available space expands to 41 cubic feet. There's a 12-volt power outlet way in the back in addition to the two up front that it shares with the sedan.
